Pendleton County, [West] Virginia

Pendleton County was created in 1788 from parts of Augusta, Hardy, and Rockingham Counties in Virginia. After the County was formed, Pendleton County's boundaries were changed. In 1821, a portion of Pendleton County, along with a portion of Bath County, formed Pocahontas County. Twenty six years later, in 1847, Pendleton County was, once again, divided. At that time, the southern part of Pendleton County, along with the northern part of Bath County, formed Highland County.

Pendleton County is one of the counties in the Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. The Potomac Highlands area is located in the north-western portion of West Virginia. The area is scenic and mountainous, and includes National Forest lands. The Potomac Highlands includes portions of the Allegheny Mountains and much of the North Branch and South Branch of the Potomac River. The Potomac Highlands includes the following counties: Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Pendleton, Pocohontas, Randolph, and Tucker.
